Boeing 777X Features System to Physically Prevent Takeoff with Folded Wings
The upcoming Boeing 777X is equipped with unique folding wingtips to allow it to fit at existing airport gates. To mitigate the risk of attempting to fly with the wings folded, Boeing has designed a multi-layered safety system. This system physically prevents the throttles from advancing to takeoff power unless the wingtips are fully extended and locked. Additionally, pilots are alerted through electronic checklists and cockpit displays about the status of the wingtips. This deliberate design, known as a takeoff inhibit function, ensures the aircraft cannot enter an unsafe flight configuration on the runway.
