Bessica Raiche is celebrated as a pivotal figure in aviation history for being the first woman in the United States to make an accredited solo flight. On September 16, 1910, she piloted a biplane that she and her husband constructed from bamboo and silk. For her achievement, the Aeronautical Society of America awarded her a diamond-studded gold medal inscribed with 'First Woman Aviator in America.' Although her flights took place in New York, Raiche has a connection to Rockford, Illinois, as her family relocated there following her father's death. After her brief but impactful aviation career, she went on to become one of the nation's first female specialists in obstetrics and gynecology.
