B-52 Stratofortress Crash in 1964 Killed Eight After Takeoff

On January 13, 1964, a US Air Force B-52D Stratofortress crashed moments after departing from Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. The bomber was conducting a routine low-level training mission when the incident occurred. An investigation determined the cause was a structural failure of the vertical stabilizer during a steep climb. This failure caused the aircraft to become uncontrollable, rolling and crashing into a nearby mountain. All eight crew members on board were tragically killed in the accident. The crash site remains a memorial to the crew who lost their lives.
