Austin Selected for Federal Pilot Program to Test Electric Air Taxis
The Federal Aviation Administration has designated Austin as a key site for its Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Proving Ground initiative. This program will facilitate the testing of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, commonly known as air taxis. Vermont-based BETA Technologies will operate its ALIA-250 electric aircraft in the region to evaluate routes, charging infrastructure, and air traffic procedures. The initiative is a critical step in safely integrating these new, quieter, and more sustainable aircraft into the national airspace. This move positions Austin at the forefront of next-generation aviation technology and urban air mobility.
