ASTM International Approves Methanol as Feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

ASTM International has officially qualified methanol as a viable feedstock for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a landmark decision for the aviation industry's decarbonization efforts. The revision to specification D7566 formally approves the alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) pathway using methanol. This move allows for the conversion of methanol from diverse sources, including renewable electricity and captured carbon, into jet fuel. The approval is expected to significantly broaden the range of available feedstocks, accelerating the production and adoption of SAF. Key industry players like LanzaJet and the Methanol Institute have lauded the decision as a critical step toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
