American and Southwest Airlines Enforce Strict Power Bank Rules for Passenger Safety
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are enforcing specific rules for carrying power banks, based on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. These policies are designed to mitigate the fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries. Generally, passengers can carry power banks up to 100 Watt-hours (Wh) in their carry-on luggage only. Devices between 101-160 Wh may require airline approval, and any battery exceeding 160 Wh is prohibited. These rules also extend to smart luggage, which is often banned if the battery is not removable. All spare lithium-ion batteries, including power banks, must be kept out of checked baggage.
