Airlink Faces Major Penalty as South African Antitrust Probe Concludes
The Competition Commission of South Africa (CCSA) has concluded its investigation into Airlink following a complaint by rival FlySafair. The probe centered on Airlink's acquisition of routes previously operated by the defunct SA Express, which was alleged to be anti-competitive. The CCSA found that Airlink's conduct likely lessened competition and has referred the matter to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution. The commission is recommending an administrative penalty amounting to 10% of the airline's annual turnover. Airlink denies the allegations, arguing the transaction was not a merger, and intends to oppose the referral.
