Airline Technology and AirTags Contribute to 90% Drop in Mishandled Bags, SITA Reports
According to aviation technology firm SITA, the rate of mishandled baggage has plummeted by nearly 90% since its peak in 2007. The report highlights that the industry's investment in advanced tracking systems is the primary driver for this success. In 2023, the mishandled bag rate was down to 6.9 bags per 1,000 passengers, a historic low. While consumer devices like Apple AirTags have increased passenger awareness and provided a personal tracking option, the report credits automated baggage handling and data systems for the massive long-term improvement.
