AFSOC Revives Skyraider Name for New Light Attack Aircraft
US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has officially named its new light attack aircraft the A-1 Skyraider II. The name pays homage to the iconic Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a celebrated ground-attack aircraft from the Vietnam War era. The new plane, technically designated the AT-802U Sky Warden, was selected as the winner of the Armed Overwatch program. It is based on a modified agricultural aircraft and is designed for close air support and reconnaissance in permissive environments. AFSOC plans to acquire up to 75 of these aircraft to replace its U-28A Draco fleet.
